BBC pundit Jermain Defoe has praised Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Sessegnon for his performance in the FA Cup.

Having signed in the summer of 2019, it’s been a rather tough time for Sessegnon in terms of breaking into the first team in north London. A combination of injuries as well as managers not picking him resulted in a loan spell at Hoffenheim last season, but under the wing of Antonio Conte, he has started to become a lot more prominent.

How many points did Tottenham gain in the following seasons? First up: 2020/21

He has started the past three games for Tottenham in the league, and even when Conte was putting together a strong side for their clash with Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, the £13.5m-rated Sessegnon was selected for that starting XI as well in the wing-back role.

His performance, which saw him complete one dribble and get away one shot whilst also having 42 touches and completing 74% of his passes whilst marauding up and down the left-hand side before being taken off with roughly 10 minutes to go (via SofaScore) saw him earn the praise of the former Tottenham Hotspur forward Defoe.

He was speaking on BBC One’s coverage of the game (as per BBC Sport Online, 20:48), and said: “At times Tottenham have got the ball in the pockets and Ryan Sessegnon’s movement has been really good.”

It certainly is nice to see Sessegnon flourishing in the Spurs side after all the trouble that he had establishing himself at the club in the first place.

And as Defoe is hinting at in his comments, it appears as though the 21-year-old is starting to become a lot more comfortable in the Tottenham system if he is able to demonstrate the movement that he is talking about and cause opponents problems, even if it is against Championship opposition tonight.

Hopefully with more consistent play for the side moving forward, he’ll get better and be able to start producing more goals and assists, like the one he created for Harry Kane at the weekend.
