Tottenham Hotspur went back on their word last summer in allowing Harry Kane to leave the north London club amid interest from the Premier League champions.

That is according to Carlton Palmer, who was speaking exclusively to GiveMeSport about the future of the 28-year-old at Spurs.

Do you think Kane will sign a new deal?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Kane was heavily linked with a potential move away from the Lilywhites last summer, with both the player and Manchester City believed to be keen on working out a deal for his transfer.

However, the Englishman remained a Spurs player and provided a public statement on the issue before the end of the transfer window.

And despite Daniel Levy and the striker believed to have had a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ over a possible summer move, Palmer believes the chairman went back on his word:

“I have it on good authority that Harry Kane was told that he would be allowed to leave the club last summer, so the club have gone back on their word, in particular, Levy’s gone back on his word,” said Palmer.

“I wouldn’t be signing a new contract for that club.”

TIF Thoughts on Carlton Palmer’s comments…

As Palmer said, Spurs may well have gone back on their agreement to allow Kane to leave last summer, however, we do think they were right to do so.

City were believed to have offered £100m for the striker, who was coming off a season where he had provided the most goals and assists in the Premier League.

And we think Spurs were right to turn down the offer of £100m when Pep Guardiola’s side had already spent the same amount of money on Jack Grealish.

The former Aston Villa man had an impressive 2020/21 campaign, however, we think to value him and Kane at the same amount is an insult to the England captain.
