Phil Hay has delivered a worrying injury update on Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt while speaking on The Phil Hay Show.

Leeds United’s Jesse Marsch has had a welcome injury boost in the form of Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper who are now back in contention to play some form of minutes tonight, although Junior Firpo is out for several weeks and Gelhardt is a doubt.

Will Leeds win tonight?

Gelhardt, who was the hero at Elland Road last week when he netted in the 94th minute to claim all three points against Norwich City but that excitement and hype around him may quieten down if he misses out tonight.

Hay has claimed that the striker is nursing a back injury, which may have come from his goal celebration last weekend.

(40:57) “Also, a back injury suffered by Gelhardt, which is pretty fascinating given that he was on the pitch for like 3/4/5 minutes on Sunday. You wonder if it was either the knee slide that didn’t quite work, or if it was the big bear hug from Pascal Struijk at the end, but whatever it was, he’s a slight concern.”

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

The young striker has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Elland Road which has come about due to the sheer volume of injuries suffered by Leeds United players, in particular fellow striker Patrick Bamford.

Gelhardt has started just two games in the league this season but appears to be trusted with cameo roles having featured 13 times and it’s clear to see why considering he’s scored two goals while registering one assist in the Premier League and currently averages 3.08 shots per game, so as an impact substitute, Marsch will know that he’ll enter the game and shoot on sight, which is required when trailing.
