Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis may be among those shown the door in the summer.

Lewis has suffered from injury woes this season for Newcastle United, meaning he has featured just five times in the Premier League, with four of those coming from the start.

The defender signed for Newcastle from Norwich City in 2020 following the Canaries’ relegation to the Championship.

After the club’s takeover, Newcastle are set to bring in a new haul of players in the summer, which would mean that several current players would have to make way at St James’ Park, and Lewis could be a victim of this after a season riddled with injuries.

Whilst speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones highlighted that a large number of the players in the Newcastle squad could be leaving the club in the summer to allow for new talent to arrive.

He said: “Players will be leaving – maybe Lewis and [Ciaran] Clark. I was told you can probably expect 10 players to leave Newcastle in the summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments…

Lewis is unfortunately an injury-prone player, as he has failed to start over 25 times in the Premier League in any of the last three seasons. And this could be his downfall when it comes to Eddie Howe clearing out his squad in the summer.

With the introduction of Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier to the club in January, the Magpies have a clear vision of the calibre of player that they want to bring in. Both of those players have Champions League experience, and Lewis does not have the same experience at the top level to be mentioned in the same category as these new signings.

However, Lewis is just 24 years old and has not been able to prove to Howe what he can do this season, so he may be given another chance next year before the manager decides to ship him off.
