Newcastle United have made significant strides forward since the appointment of Eddie Howe as first team manager.

He guided his side to another Premier League win on Saturday afternoon, battling past Brighton 2-1. It was a dream start at St James’ Park, with Ryan Fraser opening the scoring with just 12 minutes gone. Then, within a couple of minutes, he set Fabian Schar up to make it 2-0.

Lewis Dunk pulled Brighton back to just a goal behind early in the second half, but Newcastle were able to see the game out.

Ian Wright was on Match of the Day, and he shared his jubilation for Howe: “I’m pleased for Eddie, when he got the job eyebrows were raised simply because of maybe the calibre of manager they’re bringing in, but he’s a very experienced manager – very well at Bournemouth for a long time and he’s starting to prove that he’s got what it takes to get them out of it.”

Host of the show Gary Lineker referred to the appointment as ‘shrewd’ while bringing up the topic to be discussed.

He took over when Newcastle were 19th in the table, and looking like winning a game was a dream not reality. They now have six wins in the Premier League, looking all but safe from relegation as things stand.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

The win against Brighton saw them form a seven point cushion to the drop zone, something that almost looks unassailable. The form shown by the Magpies and the sides around them would suggest that they should now be done with a relegation dog fight.
