Newcastle United fans will surely be furious to hear what VAR’s thought process was for not awarding them a penalty, which has been discussed on Sky Sports.

The Magpies were seemingly not awarded a very blatant and obvious penalty when the score was 0-0 at the home of the champions of Europe when Trevor Chalobah pulled and then tripped Jacob Murphy in the box.

No!

Referee David Coote did not point to the spot and nor did VAR inform him that he should’ve taken another look at it on the pitchside monitor and that can be seen as a huge moment in the match given that the Magpies lost by just one goal in the end.

Dermot Gallagher has now revealed live on Sky Sports what VAR were thinking when analysing the penalty incident with the former Premier League referee claiming ‘Their feeling was fed back that they didn’t feel the fall was commensurable to what happened on the field.’

Newcastle PL appearances quiz! This man is the all-time top Premier League appearance maker for Newcastle, but how many did he make?

This explanation will not help Newcastle fans feel any better over their side not being awarded a penalty as Murphy was quite clearly tripped by Chalobah and the fact that Coote awarded a corner kick would suggest that he believes the defender got a touch on the ball, which he didn’t.

While this decision would not have guaranteed Newcastle United three or one point, but it would have at least put them in a very strong position heading into the final part of the game and gave them a great chance of extending what was a nine-game unbeaten run.
