Presenter Joe Wainman has tipped Leeds United player Tyler Roberts to potentially ‘flourish’ under new manager Jesse Marsch.

After a run of pretty woeful results, the Peacocks ultimately decided it was time for Marcelo Bielsa to leave. In his place, the American coach has come in with plenty to do if he is to prevent the club from being relegated at the end of the season.

While discussing what could change in the new era, Wainman suggested that the narrow style of play often employed by the manager could suit Roberts.

Talking on his YouTube channel, he said: “Roberts could flourish in this system, it will be interesting to see, you know?

“Like I say, [Marsch’s] play style is direct, it’s through the middle. The only real width we’re going to see is from the full-backs.

“And when it does go out there a lot of it is just, bam – straight into that central space so that we can set that counter-press.”

TIF Thoughts on Tyler Roberts and Leeds United…

It’s safe to say that Roberts hasn’t been the most appreciated player in Leeds colours of late. Indeed, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson recently criticised the attacker, saying he ‘has not played particularly well this season at all’.

With one goal and one assist in 22 Premier League outings this term, it’s easy to see where that criticism has come from.

However, new manager Marsch tends to favour a narrow 4-2-2-2 formation when he sets his teams up. With that in mind and with a number of more central areas to operate in, Roberts may be more suited to this style of football, just as Wainman suggests.

Only time will tell if the Welshman can discover a new lease of life under Marsch.
