Greg O’Keeffe has been speaking on the All Together Now podcast about the comments Mason Holgate and other Everton players have been making.
Everton fell to yet another defeat, making it four in a row under Frank Lampard in the Premier League and just two wins in their last 20 league matches, but somehow still find themselves outside of the bottom three.
Will Everton win on Thursday?
Yes!
No!
The Toffees were only slightly edged out by Wolves on Sunday losing 1-0, but the stats tell a different story as they only had 40% possession and mustered up a measly two shots on target in 90 minutes.
However, it was more than just the result that angered O’Keeffe, who slammed the comments made by Mason Holgate post-match which was that Everton shouldn’t be anywhere near where they are because of the squad they have, the journalist explained why this annoyed him.
(4:05) “Something that rankles with me is hearing Mason Holgate after the game, I’m not criticising Holgate particularly, but repeat the assertions several Everton players have said and they keep saying, you know, words to the effect of, we know that we shouldn’t be down here, we know we’re too good to be down here.
“Well, I know where they’re coming from but I actually don’t think I want to hear that because for starters, they’re definitely not too good to be down there, I think this for some of them is the natural extent to their level.”
TIF Thoughts on Holgate’s comments…
It’s no surprise that Holgate’s comments have angered O’Keeffe and potentially fans as the league table doesn’t lie, so the fact that Everton are just one point above the bottom three with 12 games left to play shows they are certainly not too good to be down there and potentially go down.
The Toffees have what will surely be seen as a must-win game on Thursday against Newcastle United as after that they have to face a whole host of teams fighting at the fight end of the table such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
