Sky Sports’ Johnny Phillips has been speaking on The All Together Now podcast about what Everton’s Kevin Thelwell’s biggest strength is.

Everton decided to part ways with their former director of football Marcel Brands in December and have taken their time and done their due diligence to ensure they got the right man to replace him which saw them eventually settle on Kevin Thelwell who was appointed last month.

Thelwell spent a long time at Wolves during their impressive rise from the Championship, into the Premier League and then qualifying for the Europa League, which is where Wolves fans and Sky Sports man Phillips saw first-hand the work Thelwell did at all levels within the club.

Phillips has revealed that Everton’s academy system could be in luck following the appointment of Thelwell.

“Certainly, he gets the idea of the academy and the under-23 setup, he played a key role in that as Wolves at the time, before Fosun were here, we were owned by Steve Morgan, and he invested a lot in the academy to achieve Academy one status.

“Kevin Thelwell was a big part of that process, so absolutely I would say that without a doubt is one of his strengths.”

Which of these Serie A stars did the Toffees miss out on?

The former Wolves key figure spent time with the club’s academy teams before working his way up the ranks to eventually land a spot on the board showing he has the necessary experience and skill set to operate and control the majority of what goes on at Everton, a club that’s struggled both on and off the pitch this season especially.

If Everton are to become a much more sustainable club and one that isn’t struggling to operate within Financial Fairplay Regulations like they were last summer, then they should be looking to focus on their youth ranks and the players coming through their academies, such as Anthony Gordon and Nathan Branthwaite who’ve all featured this campaign.
