Football writer John McGinley has expressed his sadness for Celtic winger Michael Johnston after he picked up a recent injury.

The winger was forced off in the 54th minute of the Bhoys’ recent Scottish Cup match against Raith Rovers with an issue to his hamstring.

While Celtic managed to win the game 4-0, it looks as though the player could be set for another setback. Indeed, Johnston has already missed a chunk of this season to injury and his whole career has been littered with fitness troubles.

Taking that into account, McGinley noted just how concerned the player was after this latest scare, writing on Twitter: “Gutted for Mikey Johnston. Almost in tears having picked up another injury.”

Having come through the Celtic academy and reserve setup, Johnston will likely have the affection of many supporters. Sadly, his injury history has really limited his opportunities to truly shine.

Indeed, despite being given his debut by Brendan Rodgers all the way back in 2017, he has managed just 31 starts for the club since.

One positive for the winger is the fact that he is still just 22 years of age. What’s more, with a contract that runs until the summer of 2025, he has plenty of time to get himself fit and prove his worth with the Hoops. It remains unclear how bad this latest injury is, but the youngster can hopefully bounce right back.
