Celtic ensured they would end the matchday as league leaders thanks to a near perfect performance at Motherwell. Ange Postecoglou’s side conquered the Well four goals to nil.

The first half saw Liel Abada put the Hoops ahead before a brace from Tom Rogic sent Celtic in at the break three goals to the good. They took their foot off the pedal a little in the second half and Postecoglou opted to rest some players, but new man Daizen Maeda added a fourth to make the scoreline look more reflective of the game.

While the attack will rightly get the majority of the plaudits, the defence deserves recognition too for keeping another clean sheet, showing Celtic’s superiority while sending a clear message to their title rivals.

One man in particular had a good day at the back for the Hoops, Carl Starfelt. The central defender was dominant at the back, winning all eight of his aerial duels while winning all but one of his ground duels – a total of 12 on the day.

Starfelt also had an impressive 94 touches of the ball in the game, showing how his teammates trusted him with possession of the football.

He was also given a 7.3 rating on SofaScore.com, trumping his defensive partner, Cameron Carter-Vickers, who had a 7.1. Joe Hart is leading the race for the Golden Glove and a big part of that will be down to the solid performances of those in front of him.

It was no surprise then that Starfelt came in for some big praise after the game, with Matthew Fulton of The Scottish Daily Express saying in his post-match player ratings: “Looked strong again and had little to do, played well in amongst an untouchable Celtic backline.

Hoops fans will no doubt have been delighted by the defender’s performance.
