ExWHUemployee has been discussing Diego Costa and the possibility of West Ham United bringing him in on a free transfer.

Whilst the transfer window has officially shut for English teams, with David Moyes’ men ending the month the same way that they started it in terms of incomings and outgoings, that doesn’t technically mean that their business is over for the year.

There is still the possibility that they could sign someone as a free agent, something that you would argue might be advisable for them given how thin the squad are in some areas such as centre-forward.

However, one player that apparently won’t be making the move to the London Stadium is Spanish forward Costa, who is without a club following his spell at Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro.

Writing in a transfer update segment on his Patreon page, ExWHUemployee claimed that Hammers boss Moyes does not desire to make a bid for the 33-year-old, who is apparently seen as a disruptive influence that the club can do without.

Ex wrote: “Despite being in need of a forward, David Moyes is not interested in taking former Chelsea forward Diego Costa on a free transfer. The player is seen as a disruptive influence and Moyes does not want to run the risk of upsetting the spirit he has in the team.”

It’s a stance that you can understand when it comes to Moyes, and one that is reportedly not without merit, given claims that have surrounded Costa from his days at Chelsea.

However, it is still a bit of a risk for the Hammers to take given how thin they are when it comes to the centre-forward position. Looking at Costa’s track record in the Premier League, even if he isn’t quite at the same level as a result of his age, he still has something to offer the Hammers as a backup option to Michail Antonio, who has needed help up top for some time

And whilst he might be disruptive, if he can help get them a few goals in the same way Jesse Lingard did last year, it could make a huge difference to how they end the season both domestically and in Europe.

So it’s a case of whether or not the risk would be worth the reward, and it could be argued in Costa’s case that it could be.
