ExWHUemployee has been discussing West Ham United and their reported bids for Jesse Lingard and Kalvin Phillips during the January transfer window.

The January window came and went without the Hammers making a single purchase in the window. Although, that’s not to say that they weren’t trying to make something happen.

Reports during the window did suggest that they were showing an interest in Lingard and Phillips, however, those deals ultimately didn’t come to pass, leaving West Ham with the same squad after the window as they had before it.

Speaking on the latest edition of The West Ham Way podcast, following a discussion over who was to blame for the lack of business that the club did, ExWHUemployee claimed that Hammers boss David Moyes wanted to bring in the likes of the England duo, before claiming that, in his opinion, the board should have done more to try and get the deals done.

I know categorically that David Moyes wanted Jesse Lingard and he wanted Kalvin Phillips – they were definitely Moyes’ choice. Yes, you can say [their clubs are] not going to sell in January, but if you go out and you bid a ridiculous amount of money, they will sell.”

Will West Ham's lack of transfers cost them top six?

The way ExWHUemployee is talking about the situation makes it seem as if it is down to the board for not offering up enough money when it comes to the potential deals that could have been made.

But it is a bit presumptuous to assume that the clubs would have let their players go if West Ham had waved enough money in their faces. For instance, with Phillips – someone who is critical to how Leeds United play – it would be hard to imagine that they would let him go in the January window, especially given how close they are to the relegation zone.

So whilst Ex can perhaps be a little bit angry that West Ham didn’t make any signings, to narrow it down to specific targets such as these might be a little bit misguided.
