TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has given his thoughts about Harry Kane following his recent performance for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 28-year-old may well have given Tottenham a spark in their pursuit of a place in Europe this past weekend.

Having failed to win any of their three previous games in the league, his two goals, including a late winner in their victory over Manchester City, ensured that they still remain in touching distance of the top seven, with games in hand also in their favour.

It wasn’t just the goal that helped Spurs on the day, as Kane also won three aerial duels – the second-most of anyone on the pitch – made one key pass and one interception on his way to an 8.68/10 rating (via WhoScored).

Speaking on the TalkSport GameDay podcast, Crook, whilst praising Kane for his performance on the day at the Etihad Stadium, did seem to have a bee in his bonnet over the England captain’s form for the majority of the season, claiming that Spurs fans might feel slightly aggrieved that he hasn’t been able to play this way up until this past weekend.

He said: “On Harry Kane – yes, he was fantastic. He had a point to prove, he certainly proved it. But if you’re a Tottenham fan, do you feel a little bit robbed by his performance for the rest of the season? Why has he not hit those heights for the rest of the campaign?”

Crook does have a point to a large extent, because whilst Kane has scored 17 goals so far this season, the vast majority of them have been in cup competitions. Six of them came in their Europa Conference League campaign, with only seven coming in the Premier League.

Compare that to previous seasons in the top flight, and it seems he certainly hasn’t lived up to the expectations and high standards that we normally expect from him.

And if Kane had been performing at that level for the vast majority of the season, it’s not impossible to think that Spurs might be a lot closer to a place in Europe than they are right now.

Obviously, if Spurs do manage to make it into a Champions League spot, then there’s a good chance a large part of this will be forgotten, but after the start that Kane had – possibly down to the constant talk over his future following his Manchester City transfer saga last summer – it might well be a source of contention for the Spurs fans when they look back on the season.
