Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has provided some details regarding the club and their pursuit of a chief executive.

It’s fair to say that change has been the order of the day for Newcastle over the past few months. Not only has the club gone through a change of ownership, but there’s also been a change of manager as well as numerous changes when it comes to the playing staff throughout the January transfer window.

One of the other changes has been that of chief executive, with Lee Charnley’s exit confirmed back in November, and the club have been on the hunt for a new one ever since.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

And according to Kennedy, who was speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters as part of a discussion about what the club is set to look like under incoming technical director Dan Ashworth, the club are getting close to putting a new one in place, although he couldn’t name who that person was going to be.

He said: “For a long time, Newcastle United’s been regarded as an unprofessional outfit – run on a shoestring with no real layers of football executives. I think that’s all going to change, and I think Ashworth’s certainly the start of that.

“But possibly one of the biggest parts of it as well is a chief executive, which I’m led to believe is also coming to fruition. I don’t have any names for you here at NUFC Matters, but I do believe that the club are getting closer to a chief executive appointment as well as Dan Ashworth, which is a really positive step.”

Will Newcastle be relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Whilst it’s hard to judge exactly what the club will look like if there aren’t any names being suggested for the role, at least the fact that Kennedy hints they are close to an appointment should come as a bit of good news.

Given the form that Newcastle are in, the players that they’ve brought in and the state of the Premier League table, they have given themselves every opportunity of being able to stay in the division for next season, when they’ll really be able to start making plans for their ambitious future.

And if they can get everything at the club lined up and ready to go for when the summer transfer window hits, they will give themselves every opportunity to make a success of those ambitious plans. Let’s just hope they manage to stay in the league to make it happen.
