Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has discussed Callum Wilson and his return from injury.

Wilson suffered an injury in early January and has been out of action ever since, with the club giving a timeline of eight weeks for him to return to action.

Given how well Wilson has performed for Newcastle since his arrival back in 2020 – finishing as their top scorer last year and leading the way this year despite his injury – getting him back was always going to be imperative in their hopes of staying in the Premier League.

Speaking on NUFC Matters when asked by a fan if a return date of 5th March, eight weeks after his initial injury, should be expected, Kennedy offered up the following response:

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

“I think that sounds about right at the moment. I think that’s probably when we’ll see Callum Wilson. I think it’d be the first game in March is the one that they’re targeting.

“But we’ll have to wait and see how his recovery’s going. So fingers crossed he’s not out for too long, because I think he’s the type of centre-forward who really could make a difference.”

Other than Wilson coming back early from injury, this is the best news that Newcastle could have hoped for when it comes to his return. A large part of their survival hopes are going to rest on him and the goals that he can get, so if he is able to come back on time from injury on time, you’d imagine their chances of staying up will increase.

But when he does come back, Newcastle are going to have to be very careful about how they utilise him, because the last thing that they need is for him to get reinjured and for them to be back to square one and potentially rule him out for the rest of the season.

Whilst they do have Chris Wood at their disposal, who has double-digit league goals in each of his four full Premier League seasons, that might not be enough to keep them up, they need to have two main men getting the goals, and hopefully Wilson will be able to be one of them as we approach the business end of the season.
