Chris Waugh has been speaking about what the future holds for Matt Targett at Newcastle United on the latest episode of Pod on the Tyne.

Targett was arguably an under-the-radar signing that Newcastle made on Deadline Day that was overshadowed by the homecoming of boyhood Magpies fan Dan Burn, however, they’ve conceded just once in both games that Targett’s featured in.

Should Newcastle sign Targett in the summer?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The left-back has proven himself to be a very astute piece of business, having been dribbled past just once since moving to Tyneside (against Everton), however, his performances could work against Newcastle in the long term, with Waugh confirming there’s no option to buy at the end of his loan deal.

Waugh spoke about how Newcastle don’t have a pre-agreed deal to sign Targett in the summer.

He said: “Well, our understanding is there isn’t a clause in the deal to be able to sign him permanently at this stage in terms of a pre-agreed fee.

“Part of the reason seemingly from the Villa end for that was that if Newcastle want to sign him, it would probably make more sense for Villa to wait until the summer, because if they agreed a price now, he might actually be worth more to them in the summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Matt Targett…

It has been quite a whirlwind start to life on Tyneside for Targett, with the defender having already played behind two different wingers in Allan Saint-Maximin and Jacob Murphy as well as being part of two different back-fours despite playing just two games, such is the instability within the squad available to Eddie Howe at present.

However, he’s already blown Howe away, as the Newcastle boss was beaming after the defender’s display against West Ham United.

While Newcastle will be desperate for Targett to keep up his solid start to life with the club, if he continues to perform like this, Aston Villa could well hike up the price the Magpies will have to pay to buy the left-back compared to what it may have cost in January.
