Chris Waugh has revealed what Eddie Howe told Matt Targett which saw him join Newcastle United while speaking on Pod on the Tyne.

Matt Targett was Aston Villa’s Players’ Player of the Season last campaign, but following the arrival of Lucas Digne last month, he was shunned to the bench, which allowed Newcastle to swoop in and sign him up until the end of the season.

Who is a better left back?

The new Magpies defender was not getting the game time at his parent club, so will surely have only joined the club if he was given assurances over being the club’s new number-one left-back.

Waugh claimed Howe has assured Targett that he will be given enough game time.

He said: “What Howe wanted was Premier League experience, Targett wanted to come out and play. He’s been told by Eddie Howe, he’s been given assurances that he will get opportunities to play as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Matt Targett joining Newcastle United…

Targett confirmed during an interview with NUFC TV that he was close to joining Newcastle United earlier on in his career, but decided he wasn’t quite ready for such a move, so he will surely be eager to finally get going on Tyneside.

It appears clear that Howe has brought in Targett to be his regular left-back given that Jamal Lewis, who was featuring regularly under the manager before his injury in December, was told he could head out on loan on Deadline Day, according to Football Insider.
