Luke Edwards has been speaking about Newcastle United’s January business on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast.

Newcastle were one of the busiest clubs during the January transfer window, bringing in five new signings as PIF forked out a reported £90 million – the most the club have ever spent during a winter window, as reported by The Athletic.

The Magpies bought their most expensive centre-back, as well as a trio of international signings. Edwards revealed that a lot of money was made available to Eddie Howe at the beginning of the window, so splashing the cash was seemingly always the plan.

Edwards spoke about what people inside Newcastle told him at the start of the window.

“I have to say, I did know from my contacts at Newcastle that the budget was about £100 million, which is why I said [Newcastle would spend] £100 million – it wasn’t just a figure I plucked out the air.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s transfer business…

While Newcastle were not able to land that final creative player they were clearly after as late moves for Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli failed to materialise, they did manage to bring in three new defensive recruits, which should see them improve the second-worst defence in the league.

While PIF made a good fight of it during their first transfer window in charge of Newcastle, it is now all down to Eddie Howe and how quickly he can get his new signings to gel together.
