Presenter Joe Wainman has slammed Premier League referee Paul Tierney for not sending Scott McTominay off against Leeds United.

In the most recent round of Premier League fixtures, Marcelo Bielsa’s men succumbed to a 4-2 defeat against Manchester United at Elland Road.

Goals from Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes gave the Red Devils a comfortable lead at half time. However, Rodrigo and Raphinha scored in the space of a minute to tie things up again. Even so, Leeds crumbled towards the end of the match as goals from Fred and Anthony Elanga killed the game off.

In the eyes of Wainman, though, his side’s chances were severely hampered by referee Tierney, who failed to deal with McTominay fairly.

Indeed, he took to Twitter to vent his anger, writing: “I hate Scott McTominay. How does he stay on that pitch, and how the f*** did he get his first card on 77. Referee absolute joke!”

In hindsight, it certainly seems as though the Red Devil was lucky to escape with just a yellow card from the match. He made a total of six fouls throughout the match but was only booked in the 77th minute after a poor challenge on Joe Gelhardt.

A video shared on Reddit shows a number of his mistimed tackles, and it really does beg the question: how was he not sent off?

Who was sent off in his first game as captain?

It seems that Wainman wasn’t the only one who was shocked by the standard of refereeing, with esteemed Times Sport journalist Henry Winter also tweeting: “How is McTominay still on?”

In the end, though, the good fortune was on the side of Manchester United as they came away with the win and Leeds were left with little more beyond a few bruises.
