Ahead of Leeds United’s next Premier League fixture, football writer Conor McGilligan has claimed that Scott McTominay ‘turns into Zidane’ whenever he comes up against the Whites.

This weekend, Marcelo Bielsa’s men will host rivals Manchester United at Elland Road. With Ralf Rangnick and co hoping to hold onto their spot inside the top four and with Leeds aiming to edge themselves away from a possible relegation battle, there is plenty to play for – not to mention the long-term animosity between the two clubs.

Speaking ahead of the game on a LeedsLive Facebook video stream, McGilligan outlined his fears going into the fixture, naming one player in particular as a worry.

Will Helder Costa play for Leeds again?

The journalist said: “The problem with [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer against us was winning the ball and then just an absolutely terrifying counter-attack, [in] which there was so much space, and there always is in and around Leeds United, that we just couldn’t deal with it.

“And we didn’t really set up defensively at all, and McTominay seems to turn into Zidane against us every single time.”

TIF Thoughts on Scott McTominay and Leeds United…

Earlier on in the season, McTominay was part of a Red Devils team that swept to a 5-1 victory over Leeds at Old Trafford. The midfielder was said to have put in a ‘rampaging’ display as he earned a 7/10 match rating from Squawka.

More notably, however, the 25-year-old caught the eye back in December 2020 when he made Premier League history against the Peacocks. Indeed, he became the first player to score twice in the first three minutes of a match as Man United won 6-2.

No doubt, when McGilligan makes his Zidane claim, he is referring to that stunning display. Perhaps, though, Leeds will be able to stifle the Scotland international and claim a positive result against the opposition this weekend.
