Leeds United winger Helder Costa does not seem to be doing his transfer value any favours while on loan with Spanish outfit Valencia.

According to the CIES Football Observatory – which assesses the transfer value of professional footballers based on scientific research – the player who cost Leeds £16m is now only worth €4-€7m (less than £6m).

Early into the start of the current season, the 28-year-old left West Yorkshire to spend the campaign out on loan with the La Liga club.

Having signed the Angolan permanently from Wolves back in 2020, Leeds may have been hoping to see Costa rediscover his best form while away from England for a spell.

Sadly, however, it doesn’t seem as if he’s having the best impact at Valencia. Indeed, in the club’s most recent league outing – a 2-1 away loss to Deportivo Alaves – the wide-man was given a lowly match-rating of 2/10.

Spanish website ElDesmarque published the review that said of Costa: “Substituted at half-time. He did not contribute anything interesting in his return.”

Will Helder Costa play for Leeds again?

One positive for Leeds is the fact that when the player was loaned out, the contract included an option to buy. This means, no matter his form, if Valencia do want to sign him, the fee is already set.

However, the issue with that is with Costa’s form being so poor, the La Liga club may well not bother making the move a permanent one – in which case, the 28-year-old would return to Leeds in the summer.

If that happens, and the Premier League side still wanted to offload him, his potential market value may suggest that they could make a big loss on their man – despite only signing him around 18 months ago.

Although he has played fairly regularly for Valencia, one assist and zero goals in 15 La Liga outings suggests he has hardly set the division on fire.

Taking everything into account, it’s hard to see him improving his transfer value at any great rate before his loan comes to an end. It’s looking like Leeds may struggle to get back value for money out of their initial move for Costa.
