Aston Villa’s on-loan defender Frédéric Guilbert put in an impressive performance for current side Strasbourg in their most recent clash in Ligue 1.

Having been a pretty regular member of the side back in 2019/20, making 29 appearances in all competitions, things have gone south for the Frenchman, as he only made three appearances for the Villans since then.

As a result of his absence from the side, the club decided to send him on loan to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for the rest of the season in 2020/21, then sent him out again this past summer, where he’s been seeing far more minutes with them than he was at Villa Park, racking up a total of 36 appearances.

His most recent appearance was certainly an impressive one, as he played a starring role in their 1-0 win over Angers.

He completed 70% of his passes, won five tackles, made three clearances, three interceptions and won eight duels, earning himself a 7.66 rating – the highest of any player on the pitch – before being taken off in the closing stages (stats via WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts on Aston Villa defender Frédéric Guilbert’s performance whilst on loan…

It certainly was an impressive performance from the 27-year-old Frenchman, which was just one example of how well he has performed at the French side overall, where he ranks in the top three for tackles, interceptions per game and blocks per game, whilst also ranking second in the overall ratings at 7.13 (via WhoScored).

Should Frederic Guilbert be Villa's first-choice right-back?

And whilst Matty Cash is currently holding the fort right now as it pertains to the Aston Villa wing-back spot under Steven Gerrard, if Guilbert is able to carry on the way he has been for the Ligue 1 side, then it might just give the manager something to think about as next season rolls around.

He was moved on before Gerrard was appointed, so it wasn’t his decision for him to be shipped out. And who knows, it might well be that he comes back from his stint in France in a position to take back his place in the Villa side.
