TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has given his thoughts on Aston Villa and their ambitions for the rest of the season.

It’s fair to say that the appointment of Steven Gerrard has worked rather well for the Villans. Following the sacking of Dean Smith, the club were 16th in the table and just two points away from the relegation zone.

But under Gerrard, they have been in impressive form and are sitting a respectable 11th in the table, nine points away from a European place in 7th, and 10 points away from the drop.

However, being in mid-table does mean that barring a dramatic change in fortune one way or the other, there isn’t a lot for them to fight for this season, especially having been knocked out of the FA Cup.

And speaking on the TalkSport GameDay podcast, Crook discussed what the rest of the season might look like for Gerrard’s men, before moving on to discuss what he expected them to do when the summer transfer window came about.

He said: “I guess the question for Aston Villa now is: what are their aspirations for the rest of this season? Because they are somewhat marooned, really, in mid-table, they’re not going to mount a serious challenge for the European places.

“Is it just about building up momentum for next season? Because I expect them to be big investors in the summer transfer window.”

Will Gerrard win silverware with Villa?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Crook is right here when it comes to his assessment of Villa and their season, because it does seem as if their best bet is to start putting things in place for next year.

Considering the form that Villa are in, as well as the appeal of working with someone like Gerrard, given his track record as a player, you can certainly see why Villa might be a team that could make some big moves in the summer as they already have done with moves for players like Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne.

So if they can use this second half of the season to put themselves in the best position possible and make themselves look like an attractive team, then they will give themselves the best chance of being able to bring in players to have a real go at things in 2022/23.
