Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel about Tottenham Hotspur’s desire to sign a new centre-back.
Tottenham have been operating with a back three, often consisting of Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez, but with Davies a natural full-back instead of a centre-back, he may not be a long-term solution.
Will Spurs sign players this window?
This has seen Spurs linked with defenders such as Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt, and Romano has now reported that this area of the pitch is the priority for Tottenham and Antonio Conte during the January transfer window.
Romano believes that Spurs will definitely be looking to sign a new centre-back.
“I will keep an eye on Tottenham because they’re doing very well with Antonio Conte, as you know I’m a big Conte fan. And they’re going for a centre back, I still don’t know the name, but I’m told that they’re going for a centre-back.”
TIF Thoughts on Spurs wanting a centre-back…
Tottenham are still unbeaten in the Premier League under Conte and have kept five clean sheets since his appointment, which highlights it may not be an area that needs immediate improvement, but clearly, Conte has seen something he’s not convinced by.
Given Conte’s recent history work at Inter, it would make sense if the club moved for someone like De Vrij, as the Italian knows the defender well and will recognise what he can bring to the squad and feature alongside Dier, who can become one of the best defenders in the world, according to the Spurs boss himself.
