Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has been discussing Newcastle United and their attempts to sign defender Diego Carlos.

The Sevilla defender is someone that has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time now, with The Athletic noting at the start of the month that he was ‘one of a number of targets’ that Eddie Howe’s men would look at this window.

And having been knocked back in their attempts to sign Sven Botman, Carlos is now the name getting the most traction as it pertains to a move to Newcastle.

However, recent reports have suggested that they will face some competition for his signature, with another Premier League side supposedly showing an interest.

Speaking on Wednesday’s edition of Sky Sports News’ The Transfer Show, Solhekol discussed the latest with regards to their chase for Carlos and how the new club joining the chase might affect things – although it does seem that the defender remains keen to make the move to the north-east.

Solhekol said: “I think there’s good news and bad news. The good news – again, we got more information today that the player himself wants to move; he wants to move to Newcastle.

“And I think there is some suggestion – although this has not been confirmed – that the player himself feels that he has some kind of promise from Sevilla, almost a gentleman’s agreement, that if a big club were to come in for him and offer him a sort of life-changing contract, then Sevilla wouldn’t stand in his way as long as their valuation was met.

“And I think the player feels that Newcastle tick a lot of those boxes, which is why he wants to move.

“Now, the situation today is that another Premier League club have made an offer for him. And the information we have is that offer matches what Newcastle have offered for him, which I think is about £30m, that is what we’ve been told.”

TIF Thoughts on Kaveh Solhekol’s comments on Newcastle United and Diego Carlos…

Will Newcastle sign Diego Carlos?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

A report from The Daily Mail has claimed that the other Premier League club that are looking at signing Carlos is Tottenham Hotspur. Whoever it is, the fact that there is another club looking at him should be a worrying sign, as Solhekol points out.

It’s clear how important signing Carlos is to Newcastle considering how long they have been after him, and if he wants to join them, given the vast wealth that they have at their disposal, they shouldn’t really be in a position of having to wait for a deal like this to go through.

They clearly have the resources, and with Premier League safety at stake, they should simply offer Sevilla a deal that they cannot refuse in order to get the deal done as soon as possible, but now they find themselves in a battle over his services they really shouldn’t be in in the first place.
