Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has been discussing Niklas Sule and a possible move to the club in the January transfer window.

Newcastle have been linked with a number of defenders this window such as Sven Botman and James Tarkowski as they look to improve a defence that owns the second-worst defensive record in the division so far after they have conceded 43 goals in their opening 20 games.

Another name that has also been mentioned has been that of 26-year-old Sule, currently at Bayern Munich, with a previous report from Kennedy claiming that Newcastle had “entered talks” with the defender’s representatives.

Speaking on a recent edition of NUFC Matters, Kennedy provided some details on the situation regarding the 26-year-old and a possible move to the north-east, and seemed to hint that at this stage of proceedings, the deal could go either way.

He said: “These talks are taking place and the player had made it known – I think this was back in November that he was interested in signing for the football club. I think it’s gone quiet a little bit, I think he’s currently in negotiations about signing a new deal at Bayern.

“So it could be the case that he’s using that leverage with that major offer on the table from Newcastle United. There’s enough clubs interested as well because he’s a high-quality centre-half available for not a lot of money.

“So we’ll just have to keep an eye on it, I think there could be a lot of movement and a lot of developments in the next few days.”

As Kennedy hints at, it’s not a certainty that the deal will get done at any point soon, but given Sule’s contract situation, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, Newcastle United really need to take advantage of the uncertainty.

Given Newcastle’s resources, they should easily be able to not only be able to go above and beyond any wage offers that Bayern Munich put in front of him, but also offer a fee that is too good for them to turn down.

As Kennedy described in his report, Sule comes across as someone that can really help Newcastle in their battle against the drop, noting in November that he “fits the category of player United are keen to target next year. The defender’s pedigree at both international and Champions League level is proven, his size and deceptive pace favourable assets.”

So that makes it all the more important that they pressure Bayern Munich to sell him now rather than have them risk losing him for free in the summer.
