Newcastle United journalist Chris Waugh has given his thoughts on the situation regarding Dele Alli and a potential move to the club on Deadline Day.

Attacking midfield has been a position that Newcastle have been looking to fix during the window, with reports suggesting that they would make a run at Jesse Lingard. However, it appears as though that deal will not be a possibility, with claims emerging that he will stay at his current club.

Alli, who is thought to be close to a move to Everton, has also been seen as a target for Newcastle, with the Toon needing to add some extra firepower to their attack, which so far this campaign has managed to tally just 21 goals in their 21 games in the league.

Earlier on Monday, The Athletic had suggested they could yet hijack the Toffees’ move for the Spurs midfielder after Manchester United blocked any move Lingard.

Speaking on a live stream for The Athletic, Waugh explained how Alli had been a target for Newcastle United for some time and that whilst they weren’t initially seeking a deal for him on Deadline Day, they might end up getting him if are given the opportunity.

He said: “It’s interesting because we’ve had information from a senior source at the club today on two occasions, both before they went for Lingard and then they went for Alli – that that’s their business done. But Newcastle are still open if proposals are floated their way.

“So they’re exploring this, Dele Alli – I still think it’s late and I think it looks at this stage like they might fall short with it, but Eddie Howe ideally wants another attacker because Newcastle need to score and create more goals than they are at the moment, as well as keeping them out at the back.”

Do you think Dele Alli will sign for Newcastle United?

No

From Newcastle’s point of view, the situation playing out at the moment seems rather odd given the reports coming out that Alli is in the final stages of making a move to Everton.

Although, as previous deals have shown us – with Dan James’ proposed move to Leeds United in 2019 a perfect example – you can never claim that a transfer is complete until everything is 100% official. So there is still a chance that they can make this happen, but with just a few hours to go until the window closes, Eddie Howe’s men will have to be incredibly quick if they want to get any deal over the line.

You just have to hope that if they do, they get the Alli of 2016/17 rather than last season as far as their hopes of staying in the Premier League are concerned.
