Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel about which areas Newcastle United will look to improve next.

The Magpies appear to have all but secured the services of Kieran Trippier as the full-back has arrived on Tyneside for his medical and to discuss personal terms after Newcastle and Atletico Madrid agreed on an initial £12 million fee.

Once Trippier is announced as a Newcastle player, it’s been reported that the club’s owners aren’t messing about and will be moving onto new targets to help reinforce a defensive unit that has been flaky this season, conceding 42 goals.

Romano has revealed which position Newcastle will be looking to improve next.

He said: “I’m told that Newcastle want to sign a new right-back, and Trippier is getting closer. Two new centre-backs – not just one, but two new centre-backs. And so Sven Botman from Lille is the priority, but Lille while £30m, so it’s not an easy negotiation at the moment.

“And maybe also a left-back, so Newcastle will go big on the market in the defence and not only [in that area].”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s transfer business…

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Eddie Howe is pushing for defensive recruits as Newcastle have kept just one clean sheet all season, which was during their only victory this term. With a run of favourable fixtures coming up, the club will want to have at least two players in place for their next match, according to Mark Douglas.

Someone who has been reported as a potential target on the opposite flank is wantaway defender Lucas Digne, with Carlos Reynoso claiming that the Magpies have made an approach to Everton regarding the defender, while players such as Diego Carlos and Sven Botman have been touted as potential targets this month.
