TalkSport reporter Alex Crook has been talking about Donny van de Beek and a possible move to Everton in the January transfer window.

Reports seemed to suggest last summer that the Red Devils were “willing to let” the 24-year-old van de Beek leave, with the Dutchman reportedly frustrated over his lack of playing time which has seen him start just 19 games at Old Trafford since his move in 2020.

What was the fee for Everton paid for Fabian Delph?

Speaking in an interview with Dutch outlet NOS in October, then Everton sporting director Marcel Brands confirmed the club’s interest in him last year by stating: “We had him on our list. At the end of the window, I received a call from Guido Albers, his agent, that he might be rented out after all. But at the last minute it was cancelled, stopped again.”

Talking on TalkSport’s Twitter feed, Crook spoke about the Dutchman’s current situation at Old Trafford, and noted that Everton were still interested in signing him, and that he didn’t believe the removal of Rafael Benitez would change things given the control that owner Farhad Moshiri has over ins and outs at Goodison Park:

“I think it’s going to be an interesting final couple of weeks at Old Trafford. Ralph Rangnick wants to bring in a new holding midfielder, I think he’s [van de Beek] been treated appallingly not just by Rangnick but by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as well.

“He was close to joining Everton in the summer, United blocked that deal late in the transfer window.

“There’s still interest from the Toffees. Will it depend on who replaces Rafa Benitez? Maybe not because Farhad Moshiri still likes to take a lot of control when it comes to transfers at that particular football club.”

Should Everton move for Donny van de Beek?

At this stage, Van de Beek, who is valued at £22.5 million (as per Transfermarkt), just needs to be playing games, and given how little he’s been used at Old Trafford during his time there, barring a dramatic change such as a flood of injuries, it doesn’t look as if it’s going to come there.

A quick look at his numbers for Ajax shows that there is a player there that can easily have an impact on games when given the chance and played in a system that plays to his strengths. And if he’s able to produce anything close to what he could at Ajax, then his signing might just be what Everton need to get themselves out of the rut that they are in as they sit 16th in the table.

Although whether or not they end up signing him in amongst the chaos of trying to find a new manager as well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
