West Ham United presenter Gonzo has been speaking on the Hammers Chat YouTube channel to discuss potential transfer targets ahead of the January window.

One of the names discussed was the West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone who has been linked with a potential move away in the coming months.

Would Johnstone make a good Fabianski replacement?

According to reports, the £7.2m-rated ace is on the radar of West Ham’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur with Hugo Lloris’ contract winding down to a potential conclusion.

The reports come amid speculation surrounding a stalemate between the goalkeeper and the Baggies over a possible contract renewal with West Brom potentially losing him on a free in the summer.

However, the Hammers Chat presenter revealed his understanding of David Moyes’ interest in the England international goalkeeper ahead of the January window.

(6:00) “I tell you somebody else who I’m absolutely sure we’re interested in though. Absolutely 100% sure. And that’s old Johnstone at West Brom.”

“But West Brom, they seem determined to get him to sign a new contract. He ain’t gonna sign a new contract.”

TIF Thoughts on Johnstone to West Ham…

We are slightly surprised to hear West Ham are interested in another goalkeeper given they are flying high in the table with Lukasz Fabianski in between the sticks.

And only this summer did the Hammers add depth to their selection of goalkeepers with the former Fulham loanee, Alphonse Areola, arriving to the London Stadium on a season-long loan.

Fabianksi is now 36-years-old so it would suggest West Ham are looking for a long-term replacement for the Polish international, however, it does suggest there may be little faith in Areola replacing Fabianski.
