A number of Sunderland fans have reacted online after hearing that Corry Evans is set to make the squad for the club’s upcoming match against Arsenal.

In this week’s round of Carabao Cup fixtures, the Black Cats travel down to north London to face the Premier League side at the Emirates Stadium in the quarter-final of the competition.

Now, according to Sunderland Echo football reporter Phil Smith, the midfield man is set for a return to fitness after suffering from a thigh injury back in November.

Smith tweeted the news to his followers on social media and it’s safe to say the club’s fans weren’t particularly happy about the claim.

Here’s what these Sunderland fans said…

“Never knew it was possible to have even less faith than I already did.”
“No not Evans we will lose 10-0.”
“£10 bet he is injured before full time, even if he’s on the subs bench.”
“Not like him to be fit for a big game is it?”
Rushing players back I can see.”
“Then injured for 10 games.”

The 31-year-old was named as club captain when he moved to Sunderland from Blackburn Rovers the summer, but a series of fitness struggles – including a hamstring injury, a calf issue and his most recent thigh trouble – have prevented him from making much of an impact at his new club.

Should Corry Evans come straight back into the Sunderland midfield?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The Northern Echo recently quoted manager Lee Johnson as saying: “Corry, at the moment, just keeps getting this little feeling on his quad and every time his leg contracts to extreme levels, he’s still feeling it a little bit. It’s just a couple of days off the pace with him.”

It seems that his new set of fans have their doubts about Evans’ ability to stay fit. Perhaps he can prove his doubters wrong with a positive display against Arsenal in the cup.
