Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has given his thoughts on the club’s owners and their attitude should the club get relegated.

Relegation is a real possibility for Newcastle this season, as with the club currently in the dropzone with just one win to their name whilst conceding 11 goals in their last three games, they aren’t exactly putting up much of a fight when it comes to staying up.

It’s a far cry from what the Newcastle owners’ expectations are for the club, and relegation could put a serious dent in those ambitions, forcing them to put things on hold for a couple of seasons.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

Speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters, Kennedy gave his thoughts on what would happen to the club if relegation were to become a reality, although he did stress that it wouldn’t be a total disaster for the club in terms of the owners and their willingness to stick around:

“I think they’d be disappointed. I think there could potentially be repercussions at the football club, because it’s October to May to stay in a division – it’s not asking somebody to come in and firefight. There is a possibility you can stay up, so I think there would be repercussions.

“But all the noises that have been said since before even the takeover is that this is a long-term investment. So I don’t see any reason why they would pull the plug on that investment having worked too hard to get to the point where you get in the door. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Will Newcastle be relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Whilst it is promising to hear from Kennedy that the club’s owners will still stick around, his words about there being repercussions is certainly something worrying to hear about for a number of Newcastle personnel.

And the manager Eddie Howe shouldn’t be immune from this. As Kennedy points out, given the timeframe from when the owners took over, which can also be attributed to Howe and when he was appointed, there will have been more than enough time for him to get them out of danger, especially when you factor in the January transfer window as well.

And when you consider that Newcastle’s owners certainly have the finances to make as many changes as they please, whilst the owners might be around for the long run, it shouldn’t be a guarantee that Howe will be around for as long as they will, as some of the responsibility will have to fall on his shoulders.
