Wolves journalist Liam Keen has given his thoughts on the performances of Hwang Hee-chan following the club’s recent Premier League game.

The South Korean made a reasonably good start to life in the Premier League having joined on a season-long loan from German side RB Leipzig in the summer. He managed to hit the ground running with four goals in his first six games in the division, whilst forming a pretty impressive duo with Raul Jimenez up top.

That hot streak has since died off however, as he has failed to score a goal in his last six games for Bruno Lage’s side, during a spell in which they have only managed to score three goals in total.

In what position did Wolves finish in these seasons? Starting off with 2020/21

Speaking on the Express and Star’s YouTube channel following their loss to Liverpool this past weekend, (7:39), Keen discussed what the team could look like in their upcoming game away against Manchester City, and hinted that Hwang could find himself out of the side following his recent spell of poor form:

“You know, it could be a good afternoon at City and we’ve seen it there before in recent seasons. I think you have to play Traore again, Jimenez will start and for me I’ll be very tempted to put Daniel Podence in. I think Hwang, his last three games has been too off the boil to warrant a fourth, that’s me personally.”

TIF Thoughts on Liam Keen’s comments about Hwang Hee-chan at Wolves

Do you think Wolves will sign Hwang Hee-chan permanently in January?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Given Hwang’s bad run of form, you can certainly understand why Lage might be tempted to drop him.

When you look at the Wolves players this season, it’s clear to see why Traore and Jimenez have their starting places pretty much confirmed, as both of them rank in the top five in dribbles per game, key passes and shots per game, ranking higher than Hwang in all of those categories (stats via WhoScored).

So whilst Hwang has impressed this season, if someone has to be dropped from the front line to try and make the it that little bit better, then Hwang is the obvious candidate to do so. Whether or not Podence is the man to make it better though, given that his production levels aren’t the greatest either, we’ll just have to wait and see, but it certainly would be understandable if Hwang doesn’t start this weekend at the Etihad.
