West Ham United presenter Gonzo has been speaking on the Hammers Chat YouTube channel to discuss the potential arrival of Jonathan David next month.

According to reports, the Hammers have opened talks over a possible swoop for the Lille striker in the January transfer window, with David Moyes said to be a fan of the 21-year-old.

The Canadian striker has hit the European stage alight recently with the Ligue 1 side with 11 league goals in 18 appearances, including three in six Champions League games this season (via Transfermarkt).

And these claims come at a time when West Ham’s league form has stagnated slightly, with just one win in their previous six games allowing Arsenal to leapfrog them into the top four.

Speaking about what the striker could bring to Moyes’ side, Gonzo had the following to say on the latest reports emerging regarding the Canadian prospect:

“He’s one of those wonderful players who – look, he’s left-footed, but if the ball falls to him on his right foot, he’s gonna hit it with his right foot; he’s not totally left-footed. He does seem to be able to play off both feet. He’s a constant menace. The biggest thing about him is he would improve the team.

“He’s also one of those players where you get one chance to get him, one chance, because you don’t get him next year or the year after. He’s also, if I’m perfectly honest, the type of player who possibly doesn’t finish his career at West Ham unless he takes us to the dizzy heights of the Champions League and we start winning trophies straight away. But he’s the type of player that you sign for £42m and sell for £100m.

“I like the look of him, I like the look, as you know, of the other guy, [Arthur] Cabral. But this is a really, really high-level player, who’s clearly going places in the game and also it’d be a statement signing for West Ham.”

TIF Thoughts on David to West Ham…

We think this would be a huge signing for the Hammers if it was a deal they could get over the line in next month’s window.

The youngster is showing big signs of promise and progression as he currently sits just two goals off (11) last season’s goal tally (13) in the league having played 19 fewer games (via Transfermarkt).

However, we would be interested to see what role he would have if he arrived at West Ham in January, with Michail Antonio having nailed down the striker role in the starting XI.

Having played Champions League football already with Lille, would David be willing to turn his back on the European competition for the Hammers if he was not their guaranteed starting striker?
