Former Premier League forward Charlie Austin believes West Ham United’s signing of Kurt Zouma is one of the best pieces of business this season.

In the summer, Zouma swapped west London for east London as David Moyes snapped up the centre-back from Chelsea for just under £30m, only a few months after becoming a European champion.

During a discussion on TalkSport, Austin and host Andy Goldstein agreed that Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo was the signing of the season, though Austin had Goldstein baffled with his left-field suggestion.

The QPR forward claimed that, for him, Zouma was one of the deals of the year so far, claiming many top clubs would have been gutted to miss out on picking him up.

Austin said: “I’m throwing one out there and you, just off air, didn’t like what I said.

“I said Kurt Zouma is definitely up there. Other clubs are looking at it thinking, ‘we should have went for him’ – Spurs, Arsenal!”

Now, there’s no doubt that West Ham are the dark horses of the season, with the Hammers still currently in the Champions League spots. Zouma, who had played in every league game since his domestic debut against Manchester United, has been a huge part of that and needs to be recognised.

Is he up there for signing of the season? He has to be. There’s probably a handful of names you could throw in ahead of Zouma, especially if you consider value when you’re looking at the summer’s best deal.

Who has the most club appearances for West Ham?

If you do take value into consideration, then surely you’d have to go for Everton’s £1.7m signing of Demarai Gray – something that Austin disregarded, saying it was about the signing rather than value, hence his selection of Ronaldo.

Given Ronaldo’s achievements in the game, you can understand why he opted for the Portuguese star, though Zouma may have a shout as the most underrated acquisition so far.
