Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting to claims from journalist Fabrizio Romano regarding the future of defender Matt Doherty.
Having arrived in the summer of 2020, the 29-year-old hasn’t had the best of times when it comes to consistently nailing down a place in the side. It hasn’t helped that he’s had the likes of Serge Aurier and Emerson Royal to compete with, but his performances haven’t done him much good, either.
For instance, he ranks outside the top 10 in the Spurs squad for tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks this season (via WhoScored) – not exactly the best look for a defender to have. So it’s easy to see why the club might be looking to offload him to someone else, which, according to Romano, is exactly what they are thinking.
Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Romano claimed that it was looking increasingly likely that Doherty would be on his way out of the club this upcoming window, saying: ‘Doherty has serious chances to leave the club in January, so Tottenham are also thinking of the outgoings. Doherty is going to leave.’
The news was relayed to fans by @TottenhamTiers on social media for them to react to, where it generated some interesting responses, with many seemingly delighted to see him move closer to the exit door:
“Please let this be true, one of the worst players we’ve ever had put the shirt on”
Should Spurs sell Doherty in January?
Yes
No
With only two natural right-backs in the squad at their disposal, you would imagine that they would need to bring in someone to replace Doherty if he does leave, so hopefully they have someone lined up already.
