Deka Petrie has been speaking on the Gallowgate Shots YouTube channel about Allan Saint-Maximin’s performance last weekend.

Newcastle headed into their most recent Premier League clash having just picked up their first win and clean sheet of the season.

Meanwhile, opponents Leicester City were coming back from Naples having tasted defeat, but that appeared to not affect them at all, with the Magpies losing comfortably 4-0.

How many players do Newcastle need to sign?

Five or less?

Five or less?

More than five?

More than five?

Someone who has been a huge part of Newcastle still being within touching distance of staying up is Saint-Maximin, given how important he’s been in games against the likes of Brentford and Southampton, but Sunday was seemingly very different.

Petrie was not happy about what he saw from Saint-Maximin on the weekend.

“There were times [against Leicester] where he was up against two or three and I believe it was [Jamal] Lewis a lot of times who was open for the pass back, he wouldn’t give him it – that’s not on.”

TIF Thoughts on Saint-Maximin…

The French winger is by far and away Newcastle’s most creative player, having racked up the most dribbles, progressive yards and also carries into the final third (FBRef), so without him, they would largely struggle to create anything for players such as Callum Wilson.

For all of Saint-Maximin’s brilliance on the ball, if he is seemingly refusing to pass to his teammates, it’s unlikely that he will last long in Eddie Howe’s team, as they can ill afford to have one player not working for the club and putting the side before any individual performances or achievements.

It will be interesting if we see any changes in Saint-Maximin’s play occur over the coming weeks as the need for the points intensifies over the Christmas period.
