In a recent press conference, Eddie Howe revealed he thought that Joelinton could make a good midfielder – certainly an interesting option for the new manager (NUFC360 via Daily Mail).

We’ve seen players reinvent themselves before to play in other positions, normally early in their careers such as Trent Alexander-Arnold moving from midfield to full-back when transitioning from the academy sides to the first team.

You rarely see it happen when players have become first team players in certain positions, let alone from striker to midfield! It could be an interesting experiment for Howe who looks to find solutions to Newcastle’s disappointing campaign thus far.

What the Newcastle fans had to say about Howe’s Joelinton plans

“Hope he succeeds, how he’s kept his chin up and kept going this last couple of years is a lesson in itself. Good luck, pray it works out.” @landing_d

“I’d wanna see him succeed as a midfielder more than just signing someone to replace Longstaff/Hayden.” @Worfourtwo

“It makes sense for his attributes. Never a striker in a month of Sundays.” @furrygiblets

“Go for it lad, I slated Joe at first like most people but I’m starting to warm to him a bit, go Eddie!” @Marksin40493935

“He looks like a completely different player under Howe.” @THEPFY2009

“I did this on FM21. Noticed he had decent midfield stats.” @J4K3_R5

Whether Joelinton could genuinely play in midfield is a huge question mark. It will take a lot of learning and is completely different to playing as a number nine. One thing for sure is, Howe needs results and fast.

It clearly hasn’t been a successful season for the Toon in any aspect (bar becoming the richest club in the world), sitting bottom of the table and under real threat of relegation. Could Joelinton in midfield be the answer to their problems?
