Leeds United are in an injury crisis at the moment, so January signings are likely to be needed, but some fans are not too happy with hearing who Marcelo Bielsa’s preferred addition to the squad could be.

When you add all those injuries to a team that are well and truly in a fight for survival, Bielsa will need all the ammunition he can get to attack the rest of the season with.

And according to Phil Hay (speaking on The Phil Hay Show), Bielsa has taken a liking towards Reading midfielder John Swift.

He said (50:32): “It seems like the sort of option that could be done, in the sort of price bracket that they would want to get into, with the sort of player who Bielsa likes. He does like Swift, in the same way as he liked Lewis O’Brien at Huddersfield.”

Should Leeds United Sign John Swift?

However, lots of fans were not too happy with his claim after it was shared online.

How the Leeds fans reacted…

“Not good enough at all.”

@TonyYaboya

“26 years old. If he was a decent Premier League type player you’d have thought he’d be up there by now.”

@PJ_Jenno

“Hardly inspiring.”

@jacklufc88

“Basically cheap and cheerful.”

@RogerHannant

“Great ambition Leeds!  Laughable.”

@BenDoug72322847

“Other teams around us are signing names from Europe and we are linked with a Championship midfielder. Owners want European football but won’t pay for it.”

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

Evidently uninspired by the signing, the news is far from music to the ears of the Leeds faithful.

However, we’ve seen players that have either been relegated to the Championship (such as Andy Robertson and Gini Wijnaldum) who have gone on to have successful careers at the very top of the game.

We’ve also seen players signed from the Championship make the step up well, such as Said Benrahma. The Algerian has been directly involved in nine goals in 22 games for the Hammers.

Although Swift may not be a marquee signing or be a Leeds fan’s first choice, he has been on fire this season. In 21 games for Reading, he has hit the back of the net eight times while setting nine up for his teammates, so perhaps they should not be too hasty to dismiss Bielsa’s apparent admiration for him.
