Journalist Matt Maher has slammed Emi Buendia for his reaction after being substituted in Aston Villa’s last Premier League match.

Over the past weekend, Villa suffered a disappointing 4-1 home defeat against West Ham United. During the match, defender Ezri Konsa picked up a red card. Dean Smith responded to this by bringing on Tyrone Mings for Buendia.

Having set up the Villans’ only goal of the game, the Argentinian was apparently not happy to be brought off early. While talking on the E&S Villa Podcast, Maher made reference to this but claimed that if Buendia didn’t want to be substituted, he should simply ‘play better’.

He said: “Emi Buendia’s kind of response to being substituted on Sunday – I’m not sure it was the right call, but look, he didn’t have a great game. I know he set up Villa’s goal.

“But at some point, you think well, yeah, I know you’re frustrated, but play better. You know, the players have to take some kind of responsibility.”

TIF Thoughts on Emi Buendia and Aston Villa…

It’s safe to say that Villa have not had the greatest run of form in recent weeks. Indeed, as things stand, the club sit all the way down in 15th place in the league table. This is a direct consequence of having lost their last four games on the bounce.

During that time, Buendia has played in every match – starting three of them – and provided just one assist. With only one goal to his name in all of his nine appearances across all competitions so far, it’s hard to argue that he’s made a great impact at his new club.

Will Emi Buendia be a flop at Villa?

Given that he claimed 15 goals and 17 assists at Norwich City in the Championship last season, Villa would have hoped to see that kind of form from their new man. As of yet, however, he has failed to deliver.
