TalkSport pundit and former West Ham midfielder Trevor Sinclair has given his thoughts on Jesse Lingard making a potential return to the club.

Having initially made a loan move to the London Stadium back in January with the aim of getting some minutes under his belt in an attempt to force his way into the England side for the European Championship, things went about as well as could be expected of the 28-year-old.

He scored nine goals and contributed another five assists during his time at the London Stadium, playing a major part in helping the Hammers qualify for Europe, although he ultimately fell short of making the England squad.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

Speaking on TalkSport (2:40) as part of a discussion about Tottenham Hotspur man Dele Alli and how changing clubs meant that you would need to ingratiate yourself with new players and supporters again, Sinclair dropped Lingard into the conversation and hinted that Lingard is already halfway there after what he did last season, and that he felt West Ham would more than likely make a move for him again at some point in the future if they carried on their good start to the season:

“He looked like he owned the place. He walked in there and the boys loved him, you could sense that. He had a really good rapport, really good effect. And I wouldn’t put it past, I mean if West Ham keep up their good form and Jesse does come to the end of his contract, I wouldn’t put it past him going back to West Ham.”

Should West Ham try and sign Lingard in January?

Yes

Yes

No

No

It certainly would come across as a match made in heaven. Lingard is currently struggling to make it into the Manchester United first-team right now and given that he is into the final year of his contract, it does look as if the writing is on the wall that he doesn’t have much of a future at Old Trafford.

And whilst Sinclair talks about Lingard coming at the end of his contract, if West Ham United can afford it and find room for him in January, then they really shouldn’t take the risk of letting him go onto the open market where anybody could get him.

If they are confident that they can make a deal happen and that Lingard would be willing to make the move, they should do what they can to get him to come in January, and who knows he might be able to be of some use to them for the rest of this season as well, both domestically and in Europe.
