Journalist Gabriele Marcotti has offered some insight into Manchester United and their thought process should they decide to get rid of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

This past week has not been the best for the Norwegian at Old Trafford. Not only did they suffer a humiliating 5-0 loss at home to arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday, but some reports have emerged suggesting that there are players at the club who are ‘openly discussing the possibility of whether a new manager would bring better results’.

On top of that, it looks as if the club might be considering potential replacements with TalkSport reporting that that former Inter Milan, Chelsea, Italy and Juventus boss Antonio Conte has already been ‘sounded out’ as an option.

But any change of a manager on a permanent basis is unlikely to come quickly claims Marcotti. Speaking on the Gab and Jules show (1:50), he claims that should the Red Devils move on from Solskjaer, that they wouldn’t be bringing in a permanent replacement for him straight away:

“I was told that they were loathed to pursue another permanent manager, while Solskjaer was still in the job. And so that should Solskjaer move on, they would look for an interim manager and then conduct a proper search, almost like a reset button.”

Will Solskjaer still have his job by Christmas?

If Manchester United do go down the road that Marcotti has suggested they could, then that would be an awfully big risk for them to take.

Because unless that interim manager ends up being a roaring success, something that is rare but still has happened before in English football, then they are essentially wasting time and potentially points in the league. Which seeing as they are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to European football, time and points is something that they really can’t afford to let slip away from them.

If they do change manager at Old Trafford, it really does need to be from one permanent manager to another, and preferably someone with a track record when it comes to success to give them the boost that they need to get over the top this season.
