Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were offered Antonio Rudiger in the 2020 summer transfer market.

Over the past 12 months, the German defender has established himself as a key member in the Chelsea squad, as well as helping them win last season’s Champions League.

However, it has now become clear that his current team were looking to offload him not so long ago, with Spurs given the opportunity to make a move for Rudiger.

Would you want Antonio Rudiger at Spurs?

Indeed, while speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE, Romano explained that ‘one of the best centre backs in Europe’ could have been shifted across London back in October 2020.

He said (14:50):“I still remember, it was one year ago, October when the market in 2020 closed. In the first week of October.

“And I still remember Chelsea were offering Rudiger around to AC Milan, to Tottenham, to talk to them.

“And look how a manager like Thomas Tuchel can change the status of a player. Now he’s one of the best centre backs in Europe.”

Interestingly enough, despite Rudiger continuing to be an integral part of Tuchel’s plans, the German is yet to commit his future to Chelsea.

With his contract running out next summer, a number of clubs are believed to be interested in acquiring the 28-year-old. One of these teams is, ironically, Spurs.

As reported recently by Italian transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio, Tottenham supposedly have a very real interest in the German centre-back.
