A bunch Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to react to claims that the club could target Napoli and Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly in the January transfer window.
The claims came on Sunday (10/10/2021) from Football Insider, who claim that the experienced African bulwark will be the first marquee signing for Newcastle under fresh ownership.
The links with the 30-year-old former Metz man comes following the completion of a consortium takeover spearheaded by PCP Capital Partners.
The change in ownership has led Newcastle to become one of the richest clubs in the world due to their backing by the Saudi-owned Public Investment Fund (PIF), with a spending spree expected to follow.
Where will Newcastle United finish in the Premier League this season?
Although he possesses little sell-on value given his age, he is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world and could inject quality and leadership into a rebuilding Newcastle back line.
Many Newcastle fans were quick to have their say on the links as a result.
What have some Newcastle fans been saying?
”I know the sky is the limit but how the hell are we going to attract Koulibaly this season? Show him the ice bath- I mean bins!
“By Jan, facilities may look different… plus plans of future changes will be drawn up and shown to him”
“It still hasnt sunk in to me that when we are linked to these type of players it might actually be true hahaha”
“I don’t know how we are going to make all these different players our ”first” signing”
“It was Tarkowski 10 hrs ago”
“Sorry, I love all these links. It’s so exciting. But can we just get the new manager in place before we start speculation over who he might want – whoever he is. I doubt Amanda and Mehrdad are going to be choosing the players. #nufc.”
There is as much excitement as there is incredulity over the links, but they are nonetheless s signal of the optimism and progress surrounding Newcastle.
