Plenty of Newcastle fans have flocked to social media to discuss a Tweet from journalist Martin Hardy of The Times after he slammed Newcastle for the value of their bench amid limited recent impact – and many called for Dubravka to return as a result

Commenting on the cost of the substitutes bench, Hardy noted:

“Nufc’s sub bench today cost £140 million – Dubravka, Schar, Joelinton, Shelvey, Lewis, Murphy, Almiron, Willock and Gayle – which is probably a bit overpriced, and also nearly half the value of the entire club.”

Do you think Lampard would've been a good appointment?

Many fans flocked to Twitter as they piled on the criticism of their team’s quality and demanded a clearout, with many also desperate to see Dubravka back in the fold as a common theme emerged.

What have some Newcastle fans been saying?

“I’ll say it again. Dubravka, Schar, Fernandez and Lewis. Get them on the pitch against Brighton. It’s gonna be Jones’ last game so he’s got nothing to lose. Put Willock back in, start Murphy over Fraser. I don’t understand how that team I said there isn’t better than todays”

@GeordieBengal

“Just wondering if any of the people telling me the other day that Darlow should be in goal over Dubravka still think the same thing… ”

@bethnufc3

“Obviously i don’t see whats going on behind the scenes, but Willock, Almiron, Dubravka and Schar should all be in that starting line up. Lewis sat on the bench while we have an ageing right winger playing left back too.”

@hello_im_kris

“[Darlow is] just such a poor keeper. I’ve said it many, many times but he can’t handle pressure. When Dubravka is on the bench ready to return, he goes to bits. Seen it these past few seasons.”

@ToonMouthTyne

“Dubravka back from injury. The rest have had their chances in previous games, nothing different of what we witnessed today. January shopping is a must.”

@MichaelSpeddin1

“If Jones can’t see that Scar, Willock, Fernandez, Dubravka, Almiron aren’t better than Clark, Krafth, Lascelles, Fraser etc then he can clear off with Bruce’s coaching staff. Disgraceful selection, disgraceful tactics (long ball to Wilson) & disgraceful performance”

@kevin_nichol

“Dubravka is fit – you start him Almiron is fit – you start him Fernández is fit – you start him Shelvey is fit – you start him Jones has had a mare Embarrassing”

@TOONRafalution

“I want to give Jones a chance but he is literally another Steve Bruce. Starting Darlow instead of Dubravka, Willock etc on bench and 5 at the back”

@AidenDZN

The hope of serious January investment is clearly an appealing one, and many are clamouring for fresh competition as much as the offloading of fringe players to free up space for a rejuvenation.

Whether that will go ahead remains to be seen, but the hotbed of fan anger emerging after the Chelsea defeat is palpable.
