Plenty of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to react to the leadership of Callum McGregor as Celtic captain, slamming his refusal to take charge in key moments.

The Celtic skipper was criticised by many fans for his refusal to take charge and force the hand of Giorgos Giakoumakis on the pitch when the Greek striker stepped up to take – and eventually miss – a crucial penalty in Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Livingston on Saturday.

Although it was confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou that Giakoumakis was the default taker, Josip Juranovic (who has scored both of his penalties) was seen by many as a steadier option.

The incident prompted a reaction from plenty of Celtic fans who took to social media to discuss the defender and why McGregor did not intervene more to make sure Juranovic stayed on penalty duties.

What have some Celtic fans been saying in response?

“If that decision was made on the park, McGregor should give up the captaincy. No way anyone bar Juranovic takes that. A chance like that with a few mins left of injury time. Shocking”

@o_neill38

“Callum mcgregor should be stepping up today and saying juranovic is taking that pen.”

@ Jmclaughlin_9

“Callum McGregor’s performance was like a Tommy Burns’ side performance… Weak and feeble”

@TheVanster67

“Callum mcgregor absolutely great player but definitely not a captain for me , I would give it joe hart”

@jamielawson08

“Callum McGregor shouldn’t have the armband he witnessed 3 horrendous tackles on his team mates this afternoon without even challenging the offending players or the referee..”

@Scoosh_1

“I’ve said it from the start, he’s never captain material. He’s too nicey nicey.”

Fans clearly want more from the Scotland international and felt he was too unassertive. However, he is surely unlikely to be stripped of the captaincy.
