Former striker and Liverpool fan Nigel Jemson believes the Reds having Virgil van Dijk back is like signing a new player.
Van Dijk, who Jamie Carragher has described as a “freak of nature”, missed most of last season through injury but has returned to help Liverpool become solid at the back.
Is Van Dijk still the best defender in the PL?
Undoubtedly, with their lynchpin back, Liverpool will be expected to mount a title challenge after finishing 17 points behind champions Manchester City last term.
Speaking exclusively to TIF about Van Dijk’s return to action, the former Nottingham Forest forward said:
“That’s like a new signing. You know, they missed him terribly last year. For them to finish third last year with the amount of injuries they had, it’s probably like winning the league the year before! Everyone wrote them off.”
During the summer transfer window, Jurgen Klopp looked to bolster his defence by bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, so Liverpool certainly look in great shape at the back right now.
As well as Van Dijk and Konate, Klopp also has Joel Matip and Joe Gomez to call upon, really showing the squad’s strength in depth in this moment of time.
