The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has delivered the latest update on Leeds United winger Raphinha after the injury he sustained against Wolves.

Leeds picked up an important point in their latest Premier League clash against Wolves on Saturday, with Rodrigo scoring a stoppage-time penalty to equalise against Bruno Lage’s men. The result gave the impression that Marcelo Bielsa’s side may finally be ready to kickstart their season, but the game was not without a downside for the Whites.

Star player Raphinha had to be taken off nine minutes into the second-half after being brought down by Romain Saiss, with the winger’s  ankle being caught by the sliding Wolves defender.

However, following the game, the Brazil international issued a positive update on social media. He took to Instagram to suggest that he was fine, also claiming that he would be back soon.

Additionally, Phil Hay tweeted a still image which Raphinha posted. The image was Saiss’ previously alluded to challenge – which, in the eyes of most, saw the Wolves defender nothing short of blessed to avoid a straight red card.

The Selecao star aimed a less than subtle jibe at the Premier League’s standard of officiating following Saiss’s tackle on him.

Accompanying the image in question was a caption, too, which translates roughly as:

‘The best referees are in the Premier (League)’

What did these Leeds fans make of Phil Hay’s Raphinha update?

“Straight red obviously. Instead Raphinha will get a charge from the FA regarding his “comments” on social media”

@davestillravin

“One rule for Leeds one rule for everyone else, pathetic from ref & var !!!!”

@lljplumit1

“Red card all day”

@oakes_89

“VAR takes a day off when Leeds play”

@drury_ben

“And the ref wouldn’t permit on field treatment, did he think Raphina over reacted to that disgraceful tackle?”

@Mickpease1

“100% worse than Struijk’s”

@SaintSturman

It was a challenge Martin Keown suggested should have led to a red card, with Saiss only given a yellow card much to the dismay of the Whites fans. It was a foul that also forced Raphinha off the pitch, with the 24-year-old having to be helped off from the field. And with that, Leeds fans must have feared the worst after already losing several key players to injury this season.

Obviously, without a timescale, it is still going to be a tense wait for Leeds fans but they will be extremely relieved that the injury sustained by the Brazilian star will not be one that will result in a lengthy spell on the sidelines for Bielsa’s star man.
