Football writer Charles Watts has compared Arsenal defender Calum Chambers with former player Nicklas Bendtner after he scored in the club’s last match.

In their most recent outing, the Gunners claimed a routine 2-0 win over Leeds United in the Carabao Cup. After going into the break level, the aforementioned Chambers opened the scoring before Eddie Nketiah sealed the victory in the 69th minute.

However, there was something unusual about Chamber’s strike which caused Watts to make a comparison to the Danish striker.

Indeed, the 26-year-old scored just 23 seconds after coming off the bench for the injured Ben White. Bendtner had achieved a similar feat back in 2007 when he scored with his first touch, also from a corner – after just 1.8 seconds – against Tottenham Hotspur.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts said (07.35): “Calum Chambers, literally just walking out now as I say that, and he’s getting big applause from the Arsenal fans that are still in the stadium as he comes out to do his TV interviews with Sky, down below me.

“And yeah, he came on, obviously got a goal. 23 seconds it was like Bendtner-esque against Tottenham all those years ago at the Emirates.”

TIF thoughts on Calum Chambers and Arsenal…

Chambers has found regular game time pretty hard to come by this season – having started just three games in all competitions – and likely would have been disappointed not to have started this EFL Cup tie.

With that in mind, he would have been delighted to make such an impact off the bench so quickly. Arsenal now progress into the quarter-finals of the tournament, which could see Chambers rewarded with more minutes for the role he played in this round.
